Airgun Review Diana RWS Air Rifles 48, 52, 54 Pellet Gun

RWS 52 is the action of the RWS 48 dressed up in a Monte Carlo beech stock (one inch longer) with a sculpted cheekpiece.
For better control , they've added checkering to the grip and forearm with plenty of power!!!

Diana RWS Air Rifle 48, 52, 54 Pellet Gun

Pellet Gun Air rifles and German Shepherds are my favorite imports from Germany. I love tools (including guns), toys, and automobiles from Germany (I can't afford a BMW so I drive a Toyota). My favorite Air rifles seem to come from the land of Sauerbraten and Oktoberfest! So it's no surprise that I like this rifle from the company founded by the father of dynamite. It belongs to a family that includes the Dianna RWS 48 Air rifle and  RWS 54. The RWS 52 is a 48 dressed to the nines; think tuxedo. The 54 Pellet Rifle puts the action on rails to reduce felt recoil.

So what is a known accuracy hound doing with a spring piston powerhouse like this? This is no target Air rifle. Well let me tell you this rifle puts some serious hurt on whatever you target! This is a hunting rifle. So whatever you are shooting at better start hiding! Bring on the water buffalos (Gallon jugs of water)! Big power (almost three times the power of a R7)! Muscular and powerful looking. It looks serous and whispers respect me!

Like all spring guns there are subtitles to be explored, mastered and savored. The T05 trigger has very little take up and has a crisp if a little stiff let off 3.30 lbs. pull set by Diana. It's not bad!

Hold sensitivity? I didn't really notice any. Shoots very well from sand bags and I have seen pictures of them on folding bipods. Looks like a “big” game (air) rifle to me. Classic beech wood stock with A Beautifully cut Monte Carlo profile cheek rest with deep checkering on fore stock and very slim pistol grip that just has that certain feel that you can fall in love with.

The reverse angle tip of the forend looks great. The in-letting/wood to metal fit is excellent. Side lever open for loading. I like the anti bear trap mechanism because I like my fingers. This rifle Is easy to cock! Closing the action requires the depression of a lever located on the left side adjacent to the loading port.

The safety is very logically placed and very easy to use. It can also be easily
re applied unlike Weirauch air guns break barrel Air rifles which need to be re cocked to re apply the safety. There is some plastic and at first it troubled me. As of now I don't even think about it. Receiver cap, safety, Trigger, transition between receiver and barrel, and muzzle break are molded in black plastic. The metal parts are nicely machined and deeply blued. The compression tube is chromed.

The sights are the micrometer type with a beefy front blade and fully adjustable rear. The front is also adjustable for elevation.

Here's a target shot with Crosman Premier pellets (CP) 14.3 Gr (.22) x5 20 yds. Hand supported from the bench.

For this target shooting session a Leapers 3x9x40 illuminated mill dot scope on Accushot one piece mount/rings RGPM2PA-25M4 was bolted on to the rifle's scope base.

Big fuss in the pellet trap! Klang! It does have some recoil but less than I expected. Blame the flyer on me. Of course every air gun has it's favorite pellets so your results may well be better once you find the right ones. The CP's are accurate enough for hunting but I would look into the JSB Predators and hope they shoot well from your rifle.

Here is a little information from the product pages about the 48 and 54 that explaining the difference between the three rifles.

The RWS 48 Air Rifle When RWS first introduced the Model RWS 48, we expected it to become a classic and it has. There are reasons to choose the 48 air rifle like size, it is smaller and lighter then the 52 or 54 and if you are left handed it has a ambidextrous stock. But lets not forget the cost!! with the 48 air rifle you can have one of the best German made RWS magnum rifles for less!!
RWS 48 Air Rifle Side Lever At 1110fps in .177 (750 mps), this rifle propels pellets at .22 rim-fire velocities! This tremendous power is generated by the use of a very robust spring piston power plant cocked by a side lever action.

The RWS 54 uses a floating action riding on rails to achieve a totally recoiless system that stands up to the pounding of our 1100 fps system. Not only does this arrangement prevent transmission of felt recoil to the shooter, it also permits the rifle to excel in the accuracy department.

When the rifle is fired, the action moves back lightly within the stock, absorbing the recoil, and permitting the pellet to exit the barrel before any of the spring vibration affects its travel. This system dramatically improves the accuracy potential of this magnum air rifle. RWS Air guns 54 Air Rifle

If I have one complaint it would be the weight. This thing is heavy. Sling swivels are a good idea for a day afield. Also only the stoutest scopes need apply for a position here.

So lets sum it up: German built, classy wood, nicely blued metal, good iron sights and usable power. A little heavy so no wimps! Self contained power plant keeps you from being tied to PCP paraphernalia. My idea of a powerful and reliable field rifle. RK
