Beeman R9 Air Rifle Pellet Gun
| There are many pursuits in the air gun universe. Hunting, Pest elimination, Can rolling (plinking), Field Target, Traditional target (in almost unlimited variations), Collecting. If you were looking for one airgun to do it all it would be the Beeman R9. Why? First lets address the issue of heritage. The R9 pellet gun is built by Weihrauch. Its other name is the HW95.
Buying the Beeman variant has some advantages, pre mounted scope (if buying the Double Gold) and upgraded stock (over the HW95 standard). This Weihrauch connection is a very good thing as some of the best spring piston rifles made are products of this German manufacturer. |

I shot this target for this review and is not in my opinion any way special. This particular R9 (.177) likes a bunch of different pellets. This target was shot with Crosman Premier Lights, a 7.9 grain pellet. CPL’s get expelled at almost
900 fps. So here it is, 5 shots at 20 yards hand supported from the shooting bench.
Those are 1” squares. Ooops, Flyer! |

Our subject is a late production R9 Gold Finger rifle serial # 1710xxx. This rifle has been scoped with a Hawke 3x9x40 on Accushot one piece mounts/rings. So why would I pick this rifle for so many possibly specialized roles? The R9 is the Jack of all trades air gun! And master of a few as well! |

There is a satisfying jolt as the adjustable rekord 2 stage trigger breaks cleanly and pre-set by Beeman at 2 lbs. No drama and it’s even fairly quiet. You may have noticed this is not a magnum powered rifle. It will never be sold as the ultimate in super high velocity. Truth be told, extreme high velocity comes at the expense of accuracy. The R9 is a very accurate rifle. In balance with that it has real usable power. It does present a little hold sensitivity. Learn how to hold it consistently and it will reward you. As you learn this essential spring piston air rifle skill your ability in all shooting endeavors will also improve. This rifle is a patient teacher so pay attention school is in session! It has a published cocking effort of 40 lb. It only weighs 7.3 lb. a light weight in this power class.

The metal except for the trigger and trigger guard is finished in a nice deep even blue. The Trigger on this one is gold anodized and unlike some brands it is metal. Other Beeman R9 variants have a metal trigger finished in a silver tone. The trigger guard is cast metal finished in black with cast in “checkering”. |

Scope grooves and scope recoil stops cut right into the receiver tube avoiding the need for an intermediate scope mount Using the scope stop recesses is not absolutely necessary but recommended. I do use them and prefer one piece mounts/rings. I have had a number of scopes on this rifle and have found no difficulty in establishing zero with any of them. The scope only version has a very nice metal muzzle break. The fixed sight version has excellent quality micrometer multi notch rear and hooded front sights. Wood to metal fit is excellent and the hardwood stock has a nice sheen. |
| The checkering on the forearm and pistol grip is very nicely done. I find the stock particularly pleasing in the sculpted hollows at the front of the cheek rest and the flair and taper of the forearm. It’s streamlined and sensual as well as finished with a nice rich stain and equipped with with a real rubber butt plate. |
The safety is automatic with cocking and is an located at the very end of the receiver tube on the left side. A visual and tactile safety off indicator is located on the right side opposite.
The safety can be reset if necessary by opening the action all the way
and “re-cocking” it. The safety is also made of metal and blued to match
the rest of the rifle. |

So let me sum this up: Quality built in Germany. Adjustable rekord trigger! Superior fit and finish. Streamlined and sculpted. Many hobbyists say that if they could have only one air rifle it would be the R9. Why? This is the can do it all rifle. Hunt, Pest, Target and plinking. Very Very accurate. Adjustable Rekord trigger. A keeper and an heirloom. RK |
