Airgun Review Beeman R7 Precision Gold Air Rifle
Beeman R7 air rifle is, without question, the finest intermediate sporting air rifle available anywhere.

|
If you have
spent any time around the air gun hobby you have no doubt heard of the
Beeman R7 Air Rifle. So what's all the hype? First the R7 pellet
guns by any other name would be called a Weihrauch HW30 Rifle. This is
a good thing as some of the nicest spring piston rifles ever made have
passed through the doors of this eminent German manufacturer. |
 |
 |
Our subject is a
current production R7 Precision Gold Air rifle serial #
1743XXX. This rifle has been scoped with a Hawke 2x7x32 on
Accushot one piece mounts/rings. And before we explore any
esthetic characteristics lets get to the heart of any modern
air rifle discussion. How does it shoot? This target was
perforated in preparation for this review and is not in any
way special. This particular R7 (.177) is very fond of Crosman
Premier Lights at 7.9 grains pellet. CPL’s get launched at
more than 600 fps. So here it is, 5 shots at 15 yards hand
supported from the shooting bench. |

There is no twang in these air rifles and just a barely
perceptible shutter as the adjustable Beeman rekord 2 stage
trigger breaks. No drama and very very quiet. You may have noticed
this is not a magnum powered wonder cannon. It will never be
marketed to those who want velocity above all else. Its not a
machete, its a scalpel. Best of all it doesn't present the hold
sensitivity that is the bane of aspiring spring gun shooters. So
is this “petite” rifle only for Women or Youths? Not in any way!
Sure it has a published cocking effort of only 18 lb. and yes it’s
handy. It only weighs a tick over 6 lb. But Beeman tells us the
stock has the same length pull as the R1. It’s heritage is that of
the ten meter Olympic target rifles of the 50’s and 60’s. Accuracy
never goes out of style and this rifle is not fatiguing to shoot
all day long.

So lets Take a look at
the execution. All metal surfaces aside from the trigger and
trigger guard are finished in a nice deep even blue. The Trigger on
this one is gold
anodized and unlike some brands it is metal. Other R7 variants have a
metal trigger finished in a silver tone. The trigger guard is cast
metal finished in black with cast in “checkering”.

Scope
grooves and scope recoil stops cut right
into the receiver tube avoiding the need for an
intermediate scope mount Using the scope stop
recesses is not absolutely necessary do to very
light recoil. I do use them and prefer one piece
mounts/rings. I have had a number of scopes on this rifle and have
found no difficulty in
establishing zero with any of them. |
 |
| Wood to metal fit is impeccable and the satin
finished hardwood stock has checkering on the forearm and pistol grip.
I find the stock shape both simple,
streamlined and elegant. It’s finished with a nice light stain and is
equipped with with a real rubber butt plate. A very interesting
feature is the double jointed cocking lever allowing for a short
cocking lever slot in the stock. This allows for more flexibility in
hand positions and even in the placement of a front sling |
 |
|
The safety is
automatic with cocking and is an located at the very end of the
receiver tube on the left side. A visual and tactile safety off
indicator is located on the right side opposite. The safety can be
reset if necessary by opening the action all the way and
“recocking” it. The safety is also made of metal and blued to
match the rest of the rifle. |

Only one sour note. The current Beeman branded scope is not one of
my favorites. It might just suit you fine. I kept mine on the
rifle for a couple of weeks and then started looking for a
replacement. This didn’t stop me from buying as I like to do
things my way. I was buying a rifle first and in my opinion the R7
is one of the very finest. The scope only version has a very nice
metal muzzle break. The fixed sight version doesn't have a factory
scope issue as it has excellent quality micrometer multi notch
rear and hooded front sights. You can purchase the
Beeman R7 DG Combo Air Rifle Double Gold Series this
rifle is topped off with a
Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 AO Matte Finish 43 dollars more.
So let me sum this up: possibly the best back yard rifle
ever. Quality built in
Germany. One of the least hold sensitive spring piston air rifles
ever. Adjustable rekord trigger! Superior fit and finish.
Streamlined and graceful. Many hobbyists say that the R7 would be
the last air rifle they would part with. If all new "adult" spring
piston buyers started with this rifle instead of some touchy
magnum powered monster the general level of marksmanship in the
air gun world would improve.
