Webley Air Guns Longbow Air
Rifle in .177 Caliber
|
|

|

I’ve spent some time with a new
Webley Longbow in .177 and
have come away very impressed with this compact hunting / target carbine.

I received the Longbow from the great folks at Cobra
Airguns. The rifle was well packaged and doubled boxed for secure shipping. The
Longbow comes from the factory with a generous coating of oil for preservation
and protection in shipping and storage, it will require a thorough cleaning
prior to use. For more information on
cleaning Air guns
I removed the action from the stock for inspection and
cleaning.
This was a simple process of removing the two fore stock screws and the large
receiver screw at the front of the trigger guard. I wiped down the rifle
thoroughly and did a very complete cleaning of the barrel with multiple
wet and
dry patches and
nylon bore brush.

|
Inspection of the rifle led me to some observations of the
construction that impressed me. The hardware used is high quality and
overbuilt, such as 6mm fore stock and receiver screws and very beefy
receiver lugs. |
|
The overall
build quality is very good, and the rifle was well lubed from the
factory using what appeared to be a red silicone based grease on the
mainspring and at the pivot points. |
The finish on the
metal is a very even, deep satin blue.
The machine work is very good on all surfaces and I was
impressed by touches such as the machined, not stamped
cocking arm, the compact, radial ported muzzle brake, and
cast trigger guard.

The stock on the
Longbow is a Venom design that is ambidextrous with equal cheek
swells on both sides, a full, well shaped fore stock and nicely fitted
red rubber butt pad with a black spacer. The stock is made from a nice
piece of high density beech with a medium walnut finish. The stock on
this Longbow has nice, subtle grain and pattern. The ergonomics on this
rifle are near perfect for me. The rifle comes to shoulder quickly and
is very fast on point. |
The Longbow is a carbine sized rifle at 39”
in length and 7.3 lbs. (unscoped)
| The trigger on the Turkish built Longbow is not the
original, three screw Webley trigger. The trigger on this longbow is a Hatsan
design, multi lever trigger. The trigger is adjustable for the length of
first stage travel only. The trigger has a medium “first stage” pull and
then goes into a somewhat long second stage. The trigger does seem to be
improving with use and may wear into to its best pull and function,
similar to a Gamo trigger. |

|
| |
The Longbow has a
large, well shaped safety located in the rear of the receiver. The
safety auto sets on cocking and can be manually reset to safe if a
shot is not taken. This is a very nice feature, particularly in a
rifle that will see use in the field.

The Longbow was designed for use with a scope and does not
come with open sights. I mounted a BSA 3-12 x 42 AO scope in an Accushot one
piece, high mount. The Longbow has a set of well machined, long scope grooves
that offer a lot of flexibility in the type of mounts used and their placement.
The Longbow does not have a recoil stop pin hole in the receiver, so I used a
BKL scope stop as a back up to the Accushot mount.
I sighted the Longbow in
with a number of different pellets, including RWS Super Domes, Crossman Premier
Hollow Points, Gamo Hunters, BSA Wolverines, and JSB Exact Express. The BSA
Wolverines proved to be the pellet that the Longbow preferred and delivered
ragged, one hole, ten shot groups on my 10 yd. sight in range. The more I shoot
the Longbow, the more impressed I am with the inherent accuracy of this rifle.
|
The Longbow has a relatively short action, with a quick,
fast firing cycle. This proved to help with accuracy. The firing cycle is a
fast snap, with moderate recoil and no spring torque, and with no perceived
spring twang. The rifle did diesel for the first 35-45 shots, indicating a well
lubed action. Cocking effort is firm with about a 40 lb. pull over a fairly
short stroke. I did not have any problem with the cocking effort in repeated
shooting sessions. The Longbow uses a very positive chisel detent for lockup
and requires a mild slap on the end of the barrel to open it.
I have been having chronograph lighting issues, so I was
unable to numbers on velocity. Based on perceived performance and comparison to
similar rifles that I own, the Longbow is easily achieving the 850 fps. it is
rated at. Based on reports that I have seen on velocity numbers on many of the
rifles coming out of the Turkish factory, these new Webleys are shining in the
velocity department.

I have been able to do a
bit of pest bird work with the Longbow and it did not disappoint.
The first opportunity I had to put the Longbow to task for pest bird
control
was a 25 yd. shot at a Starling in my yard.
Taken from a standing, unsupported position
I was able to easily down the Starling with a quickly placed shot.
I was interested in the Longbow for precisely this type of shooting and
the more I shoot the Longbow the more impressed I am.
If a shooter is interested in a compact, very well built, accurate
hunting carbine the Webley Longbow should be on their short list.
This rifle is definitely a keeper for me! |
